Special Activities

“Guard Your Heart” Marriage Conference. The Fort Leavenworth Protestant Chapel Community and Officers’ Christian Fellowship sponsored a marriage conference for military couples at Frontier Chapel on 23-25 September 2016. Forty five couples registered for the event. The speaker was Dr. Gary Rosberg, award-winning author, radio host, and co-founder of the international ministry America’s Family Coaches. Gary taught on Friday and Saturday night and gave the sermon at two services on Sunday morning covering topics such as “The Heart of the Matter – The 5 Love Needs of Men & Women,” “Team We – Four Ways to Strengthen Your Marriage,” “Great Sex in a Godly Marriage,” and “Guarding the Heart of your Marriage and Family.” Gary also led a training session on Saturday morning for couples who will be serving as mentors in our new Marriage Mentoring Ministry. In all, it was a fantastic weekend and we gained a powerful ministry partner in Gary Rosberg and America’s Family Coaches.

Highlighted Weekly/Routine Activity

Sunday School Class. Tim, Kim, and Kristin Hathaway are co-leading a chapel Sunday School class this fall titled “The Teacher I Want To Be.” The class, which began on 07 August 2016 as a follow up to our Neighborhood Bible Study Kick-Off Conference, is a video series by Dr. Danny Akin, president of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. The class material is divided into two main sections, How to Study Your Bible and How to Teach the Bible. We have averaged between 15-20 students a week, most of whom are leading or attending an OCF small group Bible Study.

God Sightings of the Month

As we began to focus our efforts toward fundraising this month (see Challenges/Concerns below), we started with prayer and God immediately began to work. We received two completely unexpected one time donations and three individuals asked us about setting up monthly support. We rejoice at God’s provision and care for us and His ministry here at Fort Leavenworth and we look forward to seeing how He will continue to meet this need. “Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.” 1 Peter 5:7 (NLT)

Challenges/Concerns

Fundraising. Though we are meeting our monthly expenses, we are behind our projected budget. We are currently focused on acquisition of new donors and will be considering some fundraising events during the next six months.

Ministry Partners

Ray and Lori Amparan are leading our new Marriage Mentoring Ministry. The mentor couples have met several times as a group to discuss the details of the ministry – how we identify mentee couples, how we pair mentor and mentee couples, expectations, formal vs informal, etc. The mentor couples also received some excellent training from Dr. Gary Rosberg on 24 September. The notes from that session are attached to this report. We are also partnering with Fort Leavenworth’s Family Life Chaplain, CH (MAJ) Jeff Whorton, who has offered to provide guidance, advice, and training to the mentor couples. Ray and Lori are currently in the process of meeting with each of the prospective mentee couples and seeking God’s direction on pairing them up with a mentor couple. We are excited about what God is going to do through this ministry.
