"Are you satisfied with your prayer life? Why or why not?"

This month’s episode puts the guest spotlight on CAPT Terry Wichert, USN (Ret.), who discusses these two questions among others in the newest installment of #OCFCrosspoint. Having served in the U.S. Navy for 30+ years, he now serves as the executive director for Association for Christian Conferences, Teaching and Services (ACCTS), a sister ministry of OCF.

Through personal experiences and some of the 650+ recorded prayers in the Bible, such as those in the books of Nehemiah and Daniel, Terry unpacks the power of persevering prayer. He explains what prayer is and what it isn’t, gives some ideas for developing a prayer life, and viewing prayer as a way to have a relationship with our Lord and align our hearts with His.

From CDR Joe & CDR Kristi Chiaravallotti, USN (Ret.), who serve as the Regional Coordinators of OCF's Mid-Atlantic Region: "In addition to the activities in the three principle sub-regions (the National Capital Region, the Hampton Roads Region, and Carlisle Barracks), expanding ROTC ministries in the Mid-Atlantic is key focus, and in particular, the recruiting of volunteers to serve as ministry team members at colleges and universities with ROTC host units.

"Over the past year, volunteers have stepped up for ROTC ministries at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Virginia, and the ministry at Virginia Military Institute, which was already strong, has increased its ministry team.

"Additionally, the Eastern ROTC Retreat will be held at the @wssocf conference center in February 2025."

Praise God for all He's done in the Mid-Atlantic in the past year alone, and pray for further revival across the military community of this region.

White Sulphur Springs, OCF’s eastern retreat and conference center, is announcing a full-time staff position of the Youth Programs Coordinator, with a start date of Summer 2025.

The Youth Programs Coordinator develops, promotes, and conducts youth programs and activities at White Sulphur Springs that draw guests closer to Jesus Christ and make an impact on the way they live for Him.

Specifically, the Youth Programs Coordinator is responsible for Camp Caleb, Allegheny Outback!, and our Parent-Youth Adventure Weekend programs. The YP Coordinator also serves as the manager of the WSS Challenge Course.

Small Bible study groups develop resilient, maturing Christian believers who grow in their ability to integrate faith into every area of their lives. Lifelong friendships are developed, comfort and encouragement are found, and family bonds are built within small communities sharing the Word and life together.

If a small group does not already exist where you are, you can lead a Pray-Discover-Obey to ask God to grow a local OCF fellowship (perhaps the 185th OCF group!) where you live. We challenge you to take a step of faith with others, and in doing so, may you be blessed by those who join in.

The devil will always emphasize what we may be called to “give up,” but who can imagine the owner of a rope of imitation pearls not wanting to exchange them for real pearls? The truth is that neither hindrances (such as an unhelpful friendship), nor sinful pleasures (which seemed so enticing) will attract you as before.

Paul gives his opinion in these verses. The average man wants a “good time,” congenial friends and peace of mind. Christianity provides these: the imitation products of the world are poor stuff in comparison. Beware of false prophets (1 Timothy 4:8)! It is not the negative “give up,” but the positive “fill up.” (Ephesians 5:18; Romans 13:14).

Satisfaction (the freedom of Christ, Galatians 5:1) causes separation. That form of separation, which is mere man-made bondage, never gives satisfaction. It is better to go straight than to “move in the best of circles,” for a minor deviation of course (1 Timothy 1:6) may well be the start of a major crash.

Did you know today is not-so-affectionately known as Quitter's Day? Studies show the second Friday in January is when most call it quits on their resolutions.

Whether your resolutions and goals for the year are to improve your prayer life, start a Bible study, reach out to coworkers, or something else, here are a few tips for sticking with habits that equip you for Christlike service at the intersection of faith, family, and profession:

➡️ Set goals that are measurable and achievable, with the knowledge that everything you have is a gift from God to be stewarded for His glory
➡️ Ask someone in your church, small group, or mentoring time to hold you accountable
➡️ Better yet, find an accountability partner who will join you in working toward the same goal
➡️ Replace bad habits with good ones instead of adding to already busy schedules
➡️ Remember to show yourself the same grace God does every day, and be encouraged to get back after your goal

"You are on a lifelong pursuit of daily habits that may seem small at first, but these accumulate into a life of Bible study, of prayer, and of service within your culture," as mentioned in the OCF Handbook. What habits are you working on in this new year?
