Professional Perspectives for Senior Officers

[…]relationship with Christ, and Paul’s teaching, mentoring relationship with his dear “son,” Timothy. 2 TIMOTHY 1:3. These relationships are strengthened by a constant remembrance in prayer. 2 TIMOTHY 1:4 They are marked by deep feelings–love for one another that is expressed in joy and in tears. 2 TIMOTHY 1:5. They are strengthened by personal knowledge and understanding of each other’s faith. A special spirit of boldness, and a recognition of God’s power, love and discipline , are required for leadership. 2 TIMOTHY 1:7. Boldness, power, and discipline are military words. How easy is it to be timid, weak or uncontrolled […]

Reignited Service

[…]over an issue. Then I read 2 Timothy 1:1-14 for a full appreciation of Paul’s response to Timothy’s fear. Paul acknowledged that Timothy’s “sincere faith” (verse 5) was in need of a fresh rekindling (verse 6). God reminded me that dwelling within me is the antidote to fear, which is trust. This reminder led me to an appropriate response to what troubled me. Once I quieted myself, prayed, and then acted, peace returned. God certainly has not given those who trust Him a spirit of fear. What He has given us, though, is His Holy Spirit, Who guides us to […]

Six Generations: 3

[…]of Reliable Men The next or fifth “generation” of believers will pick up with Timothy Mallard, a young man I met and worked with when stationed in Panama. Timothy is now a Chaplain in the United States Army and on fire for the Lord and His work. He recently shared his written testimony with me and here is how it started: “My story as a Christian goes back to several formative experiences, not the least of which was a Bible study and discipleship program I experienced in Panama when I was a teenager. Many years after that…I dedicated myself to […]

Three Words

[…]same man or woman they see in the company headquarters, on patrol, in his home, and at the unit hale and farewell. In 1967 I was the senior advisor to a Vietnamese ranger battalion. I wrote many letters to my wife during that year, but one, which perhaps meant the most to her, came not from me but from the wife of the Vietnamese major who commanded the battalion. She told Sandra how fortunate Sandra was that her husband was not like most other men, chasing the very available girls from the local village. What a blessing for my young […]

Unity of Command

[…]all be one (John 17:21). One critical way believers live in unity is to pray for our leaders. In 1 Timothy 2:1-2 the apostle Paul exhorts us to pray for those in authority over us. Through intercessory prayer for our leaders, believers unify with God and with each other against both military and spiritual forces. Here’s one last example to illustrate spiritual UOC. In a joint military environment, one commander commands bombers, tanks, and ships. One of those components is no better or worse than any other. They follow and trust the leadership of their one commander. So, too, the […]

Preparing for Active Duty

[…]of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others” (2 Timothy 2:2). Since an Air Force officer may pass through Maxwell as many as four times in a career, OCF leaders here thought it would be good to personally visit each Academy graduating class and let the “firsties” know what to expect from OCF at Maxwell. I was asked to speak to three issues: What should cadets expect from OCF during an Air Force career? What specifically does the OCF ministry at Maxwell AFB look like? And, What is the best way to link […]

[…] witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.” 2 Timothy 2:2 “Choosing the Harder Right” When I learned back in October of 1970 of the tragic death in battle of my friend and spiritual mentor at West Point, Jon Shine, and thought of the powerful and eternal impact he had on my life, and that of so many others, I committed then to telling his amazing story to others. His selfless lifestyle and his courage–at West Point, in the Army and in combat in Vietnam–have inspired me and many others whom he contacted during […]

Spiritual Battle Plans

[…]I needed to invest a similar level of detail and passion in my execution of SPIRITUAL planning (1 Timothy 4:7-8). Make no mistake, physical and military training must be done to accomplish the mission, to establish our credibility as professional warriors, and to give the men entrusted to our care the best chance for survival. We must also train as ambassadors with similar vigor. Following our spiritual pre-deployment training and planning, we must then follow through during the deployment itself. As we seek to train for godliness and prepare for spiritually dry times, it is good to start with assumptions […]

Why We Serve

[…]our military and receiving just compensation for that service is right and necessary. Paul said to Timothy: “If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever” (I Timothy 5:8). While Paul’s instruction at that time pertained to elderly members of the family, the application to your “immediate” or future family seems obvious. We work to provide for those whom God has directly entrusted to our care. But God has also entrusted to us a larger family. This responsibility also requires our service or work. […]

What you do and how you lead does matter

[…]On! “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example…” (1 Timothy 4:12). Within a few weeks of arrival at your first training base or duty station, ask yourself, Does anyone have a clue that I am different, that Christ matters to me? If your answer is unsettling, be different! In OCF we have traditionally claimed that both our first act of worship—giving God our very best—and our first act of witness is our professional excellence. It is what recommends you as someone who ought to be followed and emulated, as someone who has […]

Three Looks

[…]situation? Who is a possible Barnabas figure—someone who can encourage you? Who is a possible Timothy—someone you can invest in? What books and articles do you plan to read to help keep yourself sharp? What would you like God to do in the lives of your new superiors, chain of command, peers, and subordinates? What do you want to trust God for in this new role? As you enter each phase of your leadership journey, I encourage you to take these three looks. Look back on where you’ve been. You’ll be reminded that God was indeed acting as you led—and […]

Laborers and Laboring as Unto the Lord

[…]hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe” (1 Timothy 4:10). Unlike 401(k) portfolios that go up in smoke or hard-earned homes that vanish in a pen stroke at foreclosure, God’s promise to those who labor with and for Him is unshakeable. The fruit of their labor is deposited untouchable in heaven’s treasuries ahead of them where, “they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them” (Revelation […]

Truth and the Christian Leader

[…]In a word: Everything! The leader often finds himself or herself in a position to judge matters. 2 Timothy 2:15 encourages diligence, which leads to right decisions and honorable handling of truth. Essentially, practicing truth helps one hold a straight course. Consider other benefits of practicing and requiring integrity in those one leads: The Christian leader who upholds truth standards helps others do likewise He or she protects the integrity of institutions established by God The Christian leader sends a compelling message to others to “put off falsehood” and to speak truth to every man. (Ephesians 4:25) As with Peter, […]
