Speak my language

[…]it’s difficult to show love to one’s spouse when one doesn’t feel loved personally. But 1 Corinthians 13:5,7 reminds us that love “is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs…. always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” Jesus summed up a life lived out in love as this: “Do to others as you would have them do to you” (Luke 6:31). And even if for no other reason, we love our spouses because Jesus tells us to. Marriage is far richer when we know how to love each other effectively! And when one […]

Part of an amazing lineage

[…]we stand at the foot of the Cross, have we lived up to a life worthy of the call (Ephesians 2:10; 2 Corinthians 5:20)? The God of the Universe, creator of all things, has invited you to partner with Him in His kingdom in the places He has you right now. If we really grasp the enormous truth of His calling on each one of us, we should be passionate and excited about the mission He has for us […]

Through A Glass Darkly

by Sarah Hemingway For now we see through a glass darkly, but then face to face (1 Corinthians 13:12). She was barely nine months old when he left. Her sister was almost three. They were just getting to know each other when duty called him away to the hellish chaos of Vietnam. No one could say for sure if he’d live to return to his beloved wife and two little daughters. Committing him to the Lord’s keeping, they waved teary good-byes as his plane disappeared into the clouds. Now it was time to get on with the business of living, […]

The Wounded Healer

[…]to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions” (Psalm 51:1).  And sometimes suffering is simply the effect of living in a fallen world where evil can strike anyone. Yet none of the aspects of suffering limit God’s capacity to use pain in a redeeming fashion. Isaiah’s prophesy about the greatest Suffering Servant declares, “By His wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5). Jesus’ wounds and suffering are the venue through which we have been redeemed. Believers can rejoice because through our own lives, God uses the mystery of pain and suffering through which His eternal work […]

Spiritual Battle Plans

[…]your spiritual gifts; we grow when we do (1 Timothy 4:14). Make no provision for the flesh (Romans 13:14) Take care of your personal needs (sleep is crucial). Sneak a few minutes of relaxation when possible. Exercise as regularly as possible. Some of my assumptions regarding my deployment to Bosnia have, thankfully, not been true thus far. I have been blessed with a Christian brother and with a weekly church group. However, God is still providing opportunities for my spiritual growth through the implementation of these measures. I am thankful for His provision and for the Christian brothers and sisters […]

(Ephesians 4:11-13, Colossians 3:23, Acts 4:13) Air Force Academy “firsties” sometimes ask: “Why should I have to attend the Basic Course at Maxwell? It just  rehashes what I’ve spent four years learning.” Not true! You will build relationships that will last throughout your career, and for […]

Predictions for 2011

[…]he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness'” (2 Corinthians 12:9). God’s promises will still be true. “Does he [God] speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?” (Numbers 23:19). God will still be faithful and good. “I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living” (Psalm 27:13). His blood will still have the power to forgive sins and justify for eternity. “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance […]

Interview with Chaplain Beach

[…]blesses where there is obedience to proper authority (Romans 13:5) and the practice of justice (2 Corinthians 4:2). From a command perspective, OCF is a religious organization. Decisions that protect the rights of one legal group also protect the rights of others to meet on base. Christian ethics require our strict accountability in such matters. A comprehensive description of roles and relationships in military ministry requires a thorough study of the New Testament. Here are some possible actions. Getting Intentional in Your Marriage

[…]or together for His purposes. In essence, this couple hosted an OCF fellowship in their home (1 Corinthians 16:19). As a spiritually smart couple in today’s military and society, what do you need to add or remove to be intentional about God’s priorities for you? Open the dialogue with your spouse and discuss what you believe is God’s purpose for your marriage. Get […]

With the Love of a Clanging Cymbal

[…]angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal” (1 Corinthians 13:1). Clanging cymbal—that was a perfect description of my actions as I “clanged” away about a friend’s moral failure without any concern for the how or why. I had no love for him, and it was the one thing that, unfortunately, came through loud and clear. I wanted to show I was morally superior—I knew right from wrong while he didn’t. He was still married and should not be dating.  But I had missed the heart of the issue. What kind of […]
