Time, Talent, Treasure: Retirees

[…]Dr. Bob Smith’s salvation message there brought the high school sophomore to Christ. At Fort Lee, Virginia, LTC Dick and Brenda Kail invited Army lieutenant Joe Orosz, on his first-ever duty assignment, to a Bible study at their home. Newlyweds Jeff and Grace Silliman were invited to OCF’s Spring Canyon conference center by their Sheppard AFB, Texas, OCF leaders, and were spiritually impacted for a lifetime by much-beloved OCF Bible teacher C.N. Tokatloglou (Mr. Tok), “a living example of Christ’s loving person-hood” possessing a “rare combination of great intellect and biblical wisdom with winsome humility,” said Jeff. The sharply pressed […]

Christian Leadership for the Junior Officer

[…]will require reading and hands-on practice. For a time, put away the books on Generals Patton and Lee and the “bulletproof superhero” novels and focus on the technical aspects of your new job. Every type of unit will have high expectations of you. An airborne unit will expect you to attend Jumpmaster School. An artillery unit will expect you to pass the Gunnery Safety Exam. An Air Assault Unit will want you to graduate from Air Assault School. There are similar expectations in every service. The good news here is that your subordinates, collectively, likely already know the technical aspects […]

Six Generations: 3

[…]despite the horrific firestorm, while Rob courageously attended to Jon and Country Joe Roberts. All of these men have dealt with the emotional and physical scars from that awful day in South Vietnam’s Hobo Woods. Greg Yahn sent me several notes and emails and his words are poignant: “Lt. Shine was absolutely courageous in his assault on that day, as was Sgt. Roberts…I wish this book could be written from the first person, because we have all lost a comrade soul…God bless you and your family. God has directed your hand in all of this, pulled all of us veterans […]

Six Generations: 2

[…]I’ve been hit in the head but I’m OK. Just throw me some bandages and I’ll stop the bleeding until you finish with Roberts and get back.’ That’s very close to verbatim. Over the years I’ve told the story many time and I always include how remarkably composed he was… It wasn’t until I met you, Barry, that I understood how he could be so calm, so secure, it was of course Christ in him the hope of glory. What a privilege to be there with him even for those few moments. I threw him the bandages and while I […]

Professional Excellence (Durfey)

by CDR Robert Durfey, USCG > PDF format The U.S. Coast Guard motto is Semper Paratus, “Always Ready.” Smaller than the New York City Police Department, the U.S. Coast Guard today must carry out economic, environmental, law enforcement and humanitarian missions while serving a key role in national security. A tall order. Its personnel must be “always ready” to respond; the challenge to leaders is to serve those who serve. Those most effective in that role are those who put others’ interests ahead of their own and put their trust in the Lord. By doing so, they exemplify the service’s […]

Returning Home

by CH(LTC) Robert G. Leroe, USA (Ret.) After an extended deployment with all its unique stresses comes the long-anticipated reunion. Unfortunately, reunions can be stressful. After the initial excitement, resentment and stuffed emotions may surface. Idealistic perceptions are quickly dashed, and forgotten problems, which existed prior to the deployment, haven’t vanished–they’ve merely been on hold. It’s important not to use past hurts as weapons against each other. Forgiveness is not forgetting or pretending that nothing has happened. When you remember the hurt, remember your forgiveness. The Hebrew word for forgiveness means “to have anger in one’s fist and to release […]

Fervent Desire for Peace

by CH(LtCol) Robert C. Stroud, USAF > PDF version In an unpublished civil war diary, Lieutenant Charles Alley inscribed the following, echoing the sentiments of thousands of other faithful Christians who battled and bled on both sides. Monday, May 1, 1865 News of the surrender of General Johnston and his army–and also all the posts in his department, comprising the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida… Soon again with the blessing of our Heavenly Father we will be at home among friends, our swords beaten into plough shares and our spears into pruning hooks, never, I trust, to learn war again. Thank God for […]
